- The above map shows the complete fortification, including also the sea front and the field fortifications build in 1914. The colored lines and base numbers give just an general idea of the location of the base. The actual fortification ring wasn't one solid line of trenches and bunkers. Krepost Sveaborg was the first fortification to be build in a decentralized way, meaning that machine gun positions along with smaller shelters were in the frontline and batteries, storage rooms and ammunition caves in the background. So in reality even when one can point out two separate defensive lines in the Northern and Eastern defensive lines, the ground between those two seemingly different lines, were full of trenches and other defensive structures and in some points finally merging together.
