Extermination Camp Treblinka II, Picture 1- The extermination camp of Treblinka, along with the extermination camps of Belzec and Sobibor, was established under the Action Reinhard. Action Reinhard's main goal, was to exterminate the Jewish people from Europe. The main purpose for the extermination camps was to kill the victims immediately after they arrived and because of that, there was no need for the enormous barrack villages like in the concentration camps.

- The construction of Treblinka II was started in late May or in early June 1942. The construction was very quick, as the first transports to Treblinka II arrived on 23rd of July 1942. The first victims for the extermination camp, were Jews who were brought from the Warsaw Ghetto.

- From that point on, the extermination program of the European Jews continued nearly without any disruption, until 21st of August 1943. At that point, nearly a million people had been killed. It is estimated that a minimum of 700 000 to 900 000 people lost their lives here, although latest research claims even higher numbers. Most likely, the actual figures will not be known ever.

- After the final gassing, the camp area was demolished, ploughed and a farm was established on top of the grave of the thousands of people. The rest of the victims that there were still alive, were sent to the extermination camp of Sobibor. On 17th of November 1943, there was nothing left from the camp, as the last equipments from the camp were transported to the forced labour camp of Dorochucza.

- After the war, the first commandant of the camp, Franz Stangl managed to disappear, but was in 1967 found from Brazil and extradited to West-Germany. On 22nd of July 1970, he was sentenced to a life imprisonment for being co-responsible for the murder of 900 000 people at the extermination camp of Treblinka II. He died in the prison, in 1971 to a heart attack.

- The second commandant of the camp, Kurt Franz remained in Germany after the war, using even his own name. In 1959 he was arrested and in the first Treblinka trial in 1965, he was sentenced to a life imprisonment for being personally responsible for the murder of 139 prisoners and a co-responsible for the murder of at least 300 000 people. He was released from prison in 1993 due to his old age and a poor health. He died in 1998, at his home.

- During the over 15 months of the camps existence, millions of victims and stories about suffering...you cannot hide behind your camera here.

- The place does not need any empty words.
