- Town
of Passau is located in the Bavarian State. The history of the town is older
than the history of the Bavarian State. The first traces of the Passau can be
traced nearly 2000 years back into the history.
- The first Celtic settlement of Bojodurum was located in the area of the modern day Passau and the first notes from this settlement dates from 300BC. The Roman Empire also fortified the area and the remains from their fortifications of Boiodurum and Boiotroand Batavis can be still seen in the Passau area.
- In the middle ages, the first notes about a settlement of Passau started to appear. At that time the settlement was called Pazzawe which later was formed into a Passau. From this time, the appearance of the town is still visible. Nearly the whole town is squeezed in between of the three rivers and the peninsula.
- From the middle ages to the year 1802, Passau was ruled by the bishop princes. In 1802 the rule of the bishops were ended and Passau became an electorate of Bavaria.
- The history of Bavaria isn't that old than the town itself, but the Bavarian state existed for over 700 years.
- The first notes about the name Bavaria were made in around the year 520, by the Franks. Most of the Bavaria was converted into a Christianity in the 8th century. Bavarians managed to resists the Protestant Reformation and remained strongly Catholic. This is the case even today. The start of the Bavarian State can be traced to the year 1180 when the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick I gave Bavaria to the Wittelsbach family. The family ruled Bavaria till the year 1918, when the turmoil created by the ending of the First World War, ended their rule and led to the creation of the Free State of Bavaria.
- The book in question has been printed in 1937 and shows the town as it was in the end of the 1930's. The whole book has been printed using an Gothic letters, meaning that it's nearly impossible for me to read it. That's why I've tried an bit different approach this time. Each of the pictures does contain a text, but the text doesn't necessarily describe nothing at all about the picture. Instead, each of the short descriptions tells something about the history of Passau or about the history of Bavaria. The Gothic letters in the first place created an huge error during the first time that these pictures were uploaded to Silent Wall. I read the towns name completely wrong. Passau became Dachau. Of course both towns are in Bavaria, but the history of those two places differs quite much, so I'm grateful that an observant visitor pointed quickly my mistake.
