- I've gone past this place more times than I can remember, but during that Friday morning while driving to the graduation occasion at the school, my eyes caught the sight which resembled more like a demolition area, than a working Wood Centre (In Finnish, Puukeskus Oy). It had been few months since I had been at school, because of my final practice, to prove that I had learned all the things necessary to graduate. During that time, they had started to demolish the Wood Centre, or at least it looked like that. - During the graduation celebration, my mind was occupied with only one thing. How on God's name I've missed the news that they are tearing down the Wood Centre? I just wished, that there would still be something to see and not just the usual demolition sights: Empty and Silent Walls. - Going back to home, I had a time to inspect the area a bit more thoroughly and it didn't look too good. All kind of debris was lying on the yard, windows smashed and the warehouses looked like they would be coming down in any minute. In any case, I headed home to prepare for an exploration, as you cannot be too picky about your targets in Southern Finland. - Saturday morning saw me heading to the Wood Centre and even when I had anticipated, that it would be quite difficult to get inside the area, due to the tall fence that surrounded the place, I managed to slip through the fence quite easily, as part of it had also collapsed. I quickly went inside to the first building, because of the busy intersection, which has a good visibility to the Wood Centre's yard and I certainly didn't want to be seen. - To my surprise, the first few buildings that I explored, had all sorts of small details lying around and almost everything was still intact, meaning that the demolition job couldn't have started too many days ago. Also, while looking out, all of the buildings were still in a relatively good shape, with no pieces missing from the walls. - At least I wasn't too late with this place...

- But perhaps I can right away reveal, that this is not an demolition area. - When I had explored everything that I wanted, I started to head home, but before getting outside of the area, I stumbled to a man who just greeted me and said: "Yeah, just smash everything to pieces". He looked friendly enough and I started talking with him and asking that does he know anything about the place, like when the demolition work had started and when this place was abandoned? - To my surprise, there wasn't no demolition work in progress and the place had been abandoned a month ago. Meaning that what you see, is the result of youth visiting the place for one month. What a nice way to save money to let the youth tear this place down. Few more months and this place is razed to the ground level. No need for demolition crew... - So it's not a joke what I mentioned in the Locomotive Graveyard of Haapamäki. |
