Oil Containers Of Fortum In Laajasalo, Picture 1- The oil containers of Fortum was constructed to Laajasalo in the late fifties and was in use from the year 1960. The time was different back then and the containers, that could hold 36 000 cubic meters of oil, could be now filled with few small ships, meant for a coastal traffic. In the sixties, filling up the containers, took more ships and time and the oil needed to be transported from Naantali, that at the time, was the only oil refinery in Finland.

- Now there is a new oil refinery in Porvoo and Fortum is also concentrating it's containers there. The new area will have a lot more storage space than Laajasalo. The new container area can hold thirty times more oil than Laajasalo.

- I can hear the question raising, that what will be constructed to this area, now that the containers are gone? Believe it or not, the area will have some luxurious residential houses, even when all of the studies have said, that the ground is polluted from oil. Of course they will clean the ground, but still I can hear the ghost from Alakiventie whispering in the background...

- The actual demolition job here took quite a long time and I made two trips to the place. First trip was during the early September, with the weather still being very nice and even quite hot. The entrance to the area wasn't easy at all. High concrete wall surrounds the place and those parts that don't have this massive obstacle, have a fence, covered in barbed wire. I was finally able to find my way in and at that time, only one of the containers were gone and the office building was still intact.

- The second trip was during the mid October, with a freezing wind and icy rain pouring down on me. At that time, the entrance to the area wasn't difficult at all and only one of the containers was standing anymore. The demolition of the office building was also now underway, the purpose of my second trip.

- There's no use of talking about any stealth or infiltration techniques when it comes to this place. The area still holds other oil containers and oil industries and I could clearly observe, the tallest containers and buildings having an surveillance cameras on top. So, Hi mom, I'm on TV!

- These are the last pictures from this place, as the place was finally demolished completely in the end of the October 2003. I'm just now wondering, that what will they do with the rest of the oil industry buildings, as I doubt that the rich people don't want to live next door to a highly polluting and heavy traffic generating industry...

- The Helsinki Wall, surrounds the place. I could probably try to get some money from Neste, for advertising their company so clearly, as this is not the last picture, to show that massive writing: NESTE

- Finally inside the area. The fence is covered in barbed wire, actually quite nasty choice of it, so there was no climbing up the fence.
