- POLICE SPECIALIST DESTROY EXPLOSIVES, FOUND IN MIKKELI

- DYNAMITES WERE TOO RISKY TO MOVE AWAY FROM THE SCENE

- EXPLOSIONS DIDN'T CAUSE ANY DANGER TO OUTSIDERS

- Four obtuse thuds could be heard on Friday afternoon to the highway 13, in Harjunmaa of Mikkeli, when three police specialist from the Mikkeli jurisdictional district, that had received special training for this kind of job, destroyed fifteen kilos of dynamite. The explosives were found on Thursday evening, from a closet in unoccupied house. The person who made this discovery, was legally visiting the house and he has nothing to do with the explosives. He reported his discovery immediately to the police.

- The chief inspector who was in charge of this operation, said that the police took this matter seriously from the start, because there was a detonator wires among the dynamite. The amount of explosives was so huge and dangerous, that they couldn't start moving it to anywhere. Specialists divided the explosives into a four different lots and destroyed them one at a time. During the time of destroying the explosives, the gravel area and nearby woods in Harjumaa, were closed from outsiders. The residents in nearby houses remained in their homes, as these houses were outside of the danger area. The explosions were done carefully and there was no danger to outsiders said the chief inspector in charge of the operation. Police asked and received executive assistance from the Savo brigade. 39 soldiers participated to this operation from the garrison of Karkialammi. Some of the soldiers had painted their faces with protective coloring. The soldiers prevented any outsiders of getting even close to the explosion scene. They also brought with them, mine-sweepers from the garrison. Also in the scene was the ambulance, fire truck and a supervision unit from the Mikkeli fire department. They left from the scene at 15:45, when the operation was successfully concluded. Shortly after this, the soldiers also returned to their garrison. The chief inspector estimated that the dynamite lot is about twenty years old. How and why the explosives had ended up into a house in Harjumaa, is unclear. Police will try to clarify the history of explosives later. Finding over a ten kilos of illegal or ownerless explosives, is very rare.
