Fort de La Chartreuse In Liège, Picture 1- History of the Fort de La Chartreuse is a bit mystery to me, as I couldn't find too many references to the fort, at least not in English and my French skill is a bit rusty to say the least...

- That much I do know, that the fort was build in 1817 by the Dutch as Belgium that time, didn't exist as a nation. The fort is located on the right side of the river Meuse and The Citadel was guarding the left side of the river. According to the pictures, not much is remaining from The Citadel, but a lot and I really mean a lot is to be seen from La Chartreuse.

- During the German attack at the opening stages of the World War One, the Fort de La Chartreuse was completely obsolete. It was located nearly inside of the city and this kind of position due to the development of the artillery, was impractical as it would have meant that the city would have been in range of the artillery bombardment.

- The next references of the history of this fort tell, that the place was used as an American military hospital during the Second World War. The first American units entered to Liège on 8th of September 1944 and after a few weeks, the military hospital was in action. The 28th U.S. Army General Hospital operated here from 26th of September to the 5th of July 1945, when the war in Europe was already over. There's a memorial to the hospital, at the main gate.

- Other than that...I don't know... At least the place is not in a good condition and many of the floors have either collapsed or are too dangerous to walk, even when comparing to the upper floors of Le Valdor hospital. This was a very brief stop, as exploring the whole place would take at least one day, if not even a two or three more. This time we however didn't have the time to see the place properly as we wanted to see the Le Valdor hospital. Fort de La Chartreuse is certainly a worth of another visit to Belgium some day. All of the buildings are not even shown on the pictures, there's many more behind of these. I don't even think that Finland contains such a huge "active" buildings, as this abandoned fort is...

- The view from the main gate. I remember Titch saying to me that you can take a closer look briefly and I was thinking that briefly...how am I going to look such a huge place briefly? Well I did restrain myself of not going inside as if I would have gone inside, I think I would still be there.
