- The Russians fortified the area of Gulf of Finland during the First World War (1914 - 1918) to protect their capital St. Petersburg. During this time Helsinki was also surrounded by a land and sea fortification. The constructors were the Russian soldiers and fortification workers, but there were also a lot of Chinese prisoners and Finns working on the fortification. - The land fortification was never really completed and it was never used in it's planned purpose. On the other hand, history has proven that nearly no fortification has proven invincible. If those haven't been captured, they have fallen to betrayal or the will to defend the fortification has collapsed. - The land fortification in Helsinki is a very significant area for military history, as it's one of the first examples in the whole world, from the decentralized fortification system. Most of the position XXII:3 in Maunula has been destroyed because houses and roads has been built. Also nature itself has buried a lot from the fortification. The fortification wasn't protected until in the 1970's with the law of the ancient relics (Muinaismuistolaki). - Even when the sign states that much has been destroyed from this position, it's actually in a decent condition and enables one to see a good example from the Type A machine gun position. The sign itself is also in a very good condition and the area is without a doubt looked after as it's a part of the nature trail in Maunula. Unfortunately youth is leaving a lot of garbage into the positions, which of course after several years, will result the positions to buried under soil. - But still a very nice place and the area isn't really difficult to walk around, which cannot be said from many other areas in Krepost Sveaborg.
