Base XIII: Position 2, Picture 1- Bushes...so now you are exploring bushes? Almost...

- Have you run out of exploration targets? No not really...

- The thing is, that I did debate with myself a lot, should I include these pictures or not to the Krepost Sveaborg section. Then I came to the conclusion, that if I want to have a comprehensive presentation about the fortification, then also the not so interesting parts of the fortification should be included. And this area when it comes to things to see, certainly isn't that interesting, but what's interesting is the history.

- This hill in east of Itäkeskus, which today is an active shopping center and a suburb contains traces from the base XIII, which was started to build in 1915, after the Germans had commenced their Schlieffen Plan, the operation to attack against France, through Belgium and the war had finally settled down into a trench war. Most likely no concrete reinforcements were used in this base and certainly no complicated structures are visible at least not anymore.

- So, what you seen in the three pictures, is the remains from the base XIII.  The pictures and the place, doesn't make any sense to anyone who don't know what he or she is looking for and finally, looking at. For a casual passer by, these are just ditches and nothing more. The trenches are in a sad condition, covered completely with vegetation and much has been filled so that there's not much to see anymore.

- The base XIII was a very modest one, containing only two positions. It was also located somewhat strangely behind the main defensive lines. However as it was located close to the sea shore, it would have been somewhat effective of at least slowing down any naval landings to the Vuosaari coast line.

- The depression on the ground, is the only thing that's revealing from a distance, where the trench is going. If you decent down into the bushes, you'll notice that it's not a ditch, but it has been build on purpose. The two other pictures, would seem to show a path, but it's not a path, because it doesn't lead to anywhere. Most likely because the trench is tilting towards the parietal of the hill, water runs freely through these trenches and that's why it looks like there would be a path.
