- Again during the archeology day, you could take a trip to history. One of the targets during the day, was the Linnavuori (Castle Hill) in Vartiokylä. The sixth archeology day, during the weekend, gathered again many people interested about history. There were many interesting targets in Helsinki and during the Friday and Saturday, archeology introduced itself in east-Helsinki. The city museum had arranged guided tours in Linnavuori (Castle Hill) in Vartiokylä. Friday was reserved for the primary school classes 4 to 6 and during Saturday, other interested people could also take the guided tour. One class from Mellunmäki, explored the past with the guidance of researcher. - Linnavuori (Castle Hill) is one of the most interesting places that there is. The Swedish immigrants build a castle here during the 12th and 13th centuries. Some of it's remains have been found here, along with old knives and some pieces of old stone containers that are originally from Germany. - The discoveries made here, have also enlighten the cuisine of ancient times, because during the excavations here, old neat, sheep and pig bones have been found. Also there has been some signs, that pike's, perches and roaches have been used as a food. Linnavuori (Castle Hill) was in use for a relatively short time, because it was abandoned towards the end of Middle Ages. It's most important job was to be a lookout post. - From a totally different time period, are the trenches of Linnavuori. Russians build them here during the first world war, when they were fearing for a German attack towards St. Petersburg. The fear however never came true and the trenches were never used in a combat situation. - The trenches were originally covered, but after the WWI, drifters were starting to sleep here and so the ceilings from trenches were demolished. There is also an underground bunker here, the researcher answer to questions. One person interested about history is a fifth grader, who explored the ancient times of Linnavuori (Castle Hill) during Friday, along with many others. Old times are interesting. At least I would like to know, that how has hockey been during the old times. Also the Stone Age and Middle Ages are appealing to me, said the fifth grader. |
