I had the luck of finding this picture book about the life of Adolf Hitler in
the mid-thirties with a relatively cheap price. Even when I've heard that this
is not that rare book in other countries, I've never seen one on sale before
here and so I must consider myself lucky.
- 900 000 of these books were published in the mid-thirties, with the text printed and places for pictures that were sold separately to each of the chapters for people to attach themselves. The pictures does give an interesting view of Germany in the thirties, before the war actually broke out.
- The seller whom I bought this book told me the tale of this specific book. It was own by a Polish couple, who were sympathetic to the Nazi cause. Lately the book was own by the son of that couple and he had given the book to the person whom I bought this. I think it's quite extraordinary that a Polish couple kept the book after the war. If someone would have find out about it, I don't think that the result for the couple would have been anything good.
- Perhaps due to that reason the book was kept in an attic or somewhere out of sight and that really shows in the book. As can be seen from the front cover, the book has suffered extensive damage especially from water. This means that most of the pictures are damaged more or less when the water has glued the pages together. Also most of the pages are now only loosely attached anymore and I think that sooner or later, this book will turn into just dust and nothing more.
- With that in my mind, I decided to scan each and every picture that's still in a condition that it can be looked, to my site even when the actual job was quite huge. But I don't think I had any choices if I want to view the pictures also in the future. The more I open and glance through it, the more it will worn out and someday it would be in a condition, that you could just throw it away. But now that these pictures are here, I can look at them when ever I want to, without the fear that the book will be damaged even more. So this section of the Silent Wall serves as much of me, as it hopefully serves you.
- The pictures are organized in a same fashion that they appear in the book. I've also translated the picture text, although some of the German text I've left as they are. Mainly this is due to the fact, that certain words are understood better in German and I think that some halfway translation, just mixes the issue. Also with some words, I just wasn't sure about the actual translation. Most likely there are errors in my translations, but the idea behind the picture should be clear when reading the picture text. Even if something with the picture texts sound strange, it most likely is still correct. For example the picture text: Liner Schleswig-Holstein sounds strange, but remember that this book was made in the mid-thirties when Hitler and Germany were not yet openly aggressive. Also bombers over Nürnberg sounds funny when you look at the picture where Junkers Ju-52 clearly can be seen flying.
- As stated above, the book is badly damaged and this means that some of the pictures are also missing or are damaged to the level that there's no point of scanning them anymore. I've included a list of the Missing Pictures in case someone could scan me a samples of those pictures. However I do not even know that I have all of the pages with the book anymore. The last page in my book is number 124 and if originally there has been more pages, then those are lost for good. If that really is the case, there's no need to offer me the pictures from the missing pages, but I certainly would accept scans from the pictures on the pages that are still with my book.
